Photographic Masters of the Blur

Alfred Stieglitz, Eduard Steichen and Paul Strand, were influential photographers at the height of their productivity at the turn of the 20th century. They gave photography its rightful place in the world of fine art. I call them “Masters of the Blur”.

Studying Stieglitz, Steichen and Strand helps me understand the notion of emotion in fine art photography. Stieglitz said, “Microscopic sharpness is of no pictorial value. A little blur in a moving subject will often aid in giving the impression of action and motion.” Here are examples of these master photographer’s skill with artistic blur. As I continue to develop my own skills in charcoal drawing, I am learning to appreciate the beauty of the blur and how it adds to the emotion of fine art.
